Perspective

Academic Scholars

Scholars tend to recount the protest by including all relevant actors while analyzing the event as a social, political and environmental strategy. Only Ian Gill’s All that we say is ours, recounted memories from different important actors that were involved in the protest.

The protest was portrayed as a symbolic strategy in itself and a turning point as it attracted media and the public’s attention, claiming the strategy very effective.

The overall tone by the scholars ranged from positive to neutral as many favoured the protest as an environmental success.

The topics changed from an anti-colonial tone, to joint efforts between environmentalists and the Haidas. In recent years, the protest has been acknowledged as a success, a symbolic event and a turning point as a step towards resolving Indigenous land claims.
