In 1985, after years of tension over resource extraction on Haida Gwaii, a logging company was allowed by the BC Government to renew its licenses after a previous promise to halt logging on the Islands. Windy Bay (HIkyah'LInagaay) in Lyell Island (Athlii Gwaii) was an important access point for the logging to continue.

November 1985, 72 Haidas converged on the area and peacefully formed a blockade along the logging road. Environmentalists were also present to help with the protest. 17 including Haida elders were arrested by the RCMP and 11 convicted of contempt of court.
