ABOUT US

Welcome to our website about a historic event, a protest on October 1985 on Lyell Island in Haida Gwaii, that determined the destiny of South Moresby Island and led to the creation of Gwaii Haanas National Park in 1993.

We are a group of four undergraduate researchers from the Department of Geography at University of British Columbia hoping to bridge the knowledge gap of how the protest at Lyell Island is represented in the media and academic scholarships. This website is intended for those who are interested in learning more about the event and how it led to the formation of the national park. This could perhaps incite further research about the topic. Our research aims to critically analyze how different perspectives can convey varying depictions based on the themes of memory, symbol and attitude.

Please feel free to explore and learn more about how this momentous event was represented in newspapers and scholarly articles.
