Haida Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is located in the northwest of British Columbia. In 1993, after 19 years of physical and legislative struggle between the Province of British Columbia and the Haida people, the Gwaii Haanas National Park, National Marine Conservation Area and Haida Heritage Site were created. The National Park encompasses approximately 15% of the archipelago, contains 138 of the 150 islands that make up Haida Gwaii and holds the remains of 500 Haida heritage sites. This area has become an exemplary case of co-management between the Haida people and the BC government, which paved the way for other Indigenous peoples by increasing their chances of gaining lawful autonomy.
